Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains - Ait Ben haddou - Ouarzazate - Dades Gorge
At 8 am, Merzouga Morocco Tours will pick you up from your hotel or riad. Morocco’s highest pass, the Tizi n’Tichka (2260 m), was built by the Foreign Legion and is our route to the Dadès Gorges. The route climbs through verdant terrain with spectacular views of the High Atlas Mountains before winding through Berber settlements with their ramshackle earthen houses.
After the pass, the terrain becomes more rugged in the direction of the breathtaking kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, or in this case, Ksar (fortified town). Currently recognized as a World Heritage Site, it is one of the best and most intact examples of land architecture in Morocco and has been the backdrop for numerous epic films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Alexander.
Discover the Thousand kasbah road
Next, we will travel to Ouarzazate, known as “the Hollywood of Africa” and home to Atlas Studios. Here we will have lunch next to the Kasbah of Taourirt, an imposing castle with more than 300 rooms, formerly owned by the fierce political and tribal leader El Glaoui. We continue along the route known as “the road of a thousand Kasbahs” and stop in Kalaat M’gouna, also known as “the city of roses,” where roses are grown for the area’s perfume distillery and are prized for their powerful aroma. An annual rose harvest festival is held in May. The last leg of the journey takes us through even more breathtaking scenery to our .

We will reach Merzouga early in the morning, crossing the gorge of Morocco’s highest oasis valley, the Todra Gorge. Your guide and camels will be waiting to transport you across the high sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara once you reach the small town of Merzouga on the edge of the desert.
After a two-hour ride on Aria camelback, you will ride practically until sunset before reaching your camp, furnished with traditional Berber tents. You will be served mint tea while your camels and luggage are cared for. You will also enjoy a starry night with Berber music.
